SAME OLD WAYS…SAME OLD RESULTS
The bad news: The last two national gang assessment reports released by the federal government (for the years 2013 and 2011 respectively) for public consumption continue to paint an abysmal picture of the rise and spread of Modern Street Gangs in the USA. The worse news: Because law enforcement has gotten ‘hooked’ on federal grants to fight gang activity and launch anti-gang efforts, about twenty-five percent of law enforcement agencies reported that they could NOT continue with their anti-gang fight BECAUSE of a lack of federal grants. Thus, in the 2013 report, issued a few weeks back by the US Justice Department (and is listed at the www.fbi.gov website), there is NO current estimate of the number of gang members on the streets of America.
Let ol’ Mike give you a realistic number to fill in that blank: 2 MILLION. I’ll also speculate as to why no firm number was included in the 2013 report; a) the recession/depression is worsening and the government is running out of money for grant packages, or; b) law enforcement, social workers, schools, psychologists and the juvenile justice system have thrown the kitchen sink at gangs; gangs have thrown the house WITH the kitchen sink–back at them! The same old ways…continue not to work.
Sure, there are some instances where local cops have asked pastors for help on occasion…as long as Christ is kept out of the mix. The old ways still reign supreme. In their pride, law enforcement agencies continue to ‘sequester’ information on local gang activity from the general public (while demanding help and information) AND the MSM (by denying that there is a gang problem–even though the body counts continue to increase). REAL training programs FOR churches FROM law enforcement agencies are as scarce as hen’s teeth…thus leaving churches scrambling to find their own Christian-centered anti-gang training programs.
The law enforcement community has hidden behind the ‘we can’t share information with the public because of ongoing investigations’ stonewall since 2005. Meanwhile, MSGs have increasingly been turning to Santeria, Satanism, Voodoo and a variety of other pagan religious practices to strengthen their grip OVER their memberships. Thus, it is up to churches, schools and the public to care about their OWN safety, and make the appropriate investments in anti-gang training. Today’s gangs develop from a spiritual base; it will take spiritual practices to fight them, stop them, and eliminate them FROM our communities, one gang member at a time.
